Have you ever get furiously mad that you feel like want to bite the person head off?
That’s what we feel at the moment.
Apparently, the guy we trusted for the past 3.5 months lied to us all the time! Yes, this was the same guy who’s responsible for fixing Combilele. The same guy who help us find the Combilele at the beginning and also the same guy who told us that he would help us for the trip if there’s any trouble along the way because he has all the “network” that we need.
“I’m deeply sorry, but to be honest, I don’t have any more capital to finish your car…”
A few months back we decided to put our Combi in the AL*NI4 garage ( VW Workshop around Jalan 4tl*s, Antapani, Bandung) of the guy (Mang T*le/Indr*) who helped us to find the Combi in the first place (you can read it HERE). We realise that we don’t have required knowledge, space and tools to restored and transform Combilele for our journey. So we thought this is the right decision and happily go along with it.
After a lengthy discussion, we agreed on the price for the transformation is Rp 10,000,000 (700EUR) for the interior plus all of the engine fixing regardless the spare parts (we are the one who responsible to buy it if we need some).
That’s sound very good bargain for us.
So we decided to fully pay all the cost in the front so he and his team can work on it. We also didn’t ask for receipt as we believe this guy is passionate about classic cars and seems like responsible for his job as what he told us. This was really bold and stupid move as many of our family and friends said.
The first month due to this guy personal problem, he barely touched the car. But we understand the situation, so we didn’t make a fuss about it.
The second month, he starts to work on it, but the progress extremely slow. We still believe when he said it would be done within 2 weeks. And of course, he missed it again.
This bullshit goes on and on for the total of 2.5 months. At this time we already moved back to Depok, Issei parents house (3 hours drive from Bandung), so we can save the rent. Now the extra cost already doubled the initial budget for all of the lists he required us to buy. But then, because we couldn’t find the parts easily, he offered us to buy all of the things we need on some of his regular shops where he used to go. We agreed, and again this is our another stupid moves.
It was the 7th time (3.5 months after) he missed the deadline. We decided to come to the garage because he told us that the car is almost finished and we can take it the next day. And again, when we arrived, the van it’s not even 70% completed as we thought.
This time we were furious about the situation.
“How come you told us to come, and you even said the car could be ready today?”
He only mumbles and tried to blame his employees and situation. Which honestly none of our business as customers. His reactions and excuses showed the lacking of responsibility, incompetence and unprofessionalism as the owner of the garage.
Suddenly after we said some of our complaints, he replied,
“I’m deeply sorry, but to be honest, I don’t have any more capital to finish your car..”
WHAT THE F*CK!!!!!!! After all of the money we spent?! How the f*ck he said that he doesn’t have capital?! And from all of the receipts he gave us, many of spare parts were missing.
At that moment we have to admit that we were fed up with our patience and realised more of our stupidity. The more we talked, the more we are sure any communication is not going to bring any differences. He used our money for something else and now he’s in trouble. The only possible solution from him is to give us another promise which we explicitly reject it.
That day we decided to take our Combilele home no matter how and what are the conditions. In the end, we decided to finish the transformation of Combilele in Depok instead.
Luckily in Depok we know some Volkswagen enthusiasts that recommend some garage to us. The new garage called Bengkel Ciliwung VW in Jalan Ciliwung no.5 RT 001 RW 01 Kemirimuka Beji, Kota Depok, (Pak Bontir & Bang Mahdi as a mechanics). Bit worried with a new garage but we decided to go along with it and be more cautious than before. Out of expectation, the past two weeks we met so many wonderful people that help us with the Combilele. We were satisfied with their work and definitely recommend their services if any of you need to fix your VW around Depok. The transformation finally finished on time, and we are ready to test drive Combilele for the next couple of weeks.
We will not take further action for this incident, but we have to admit that we took a lesson out of this situation. Apart from our goodwill, there’s always somebody tries to take an advantage out of it. And now we are starting to realise that van life is not always easy, but we are still excited to start the journey with our Combilele.
